What is Coronavirus?

Coronaviruses are a group of viruses which cause mammalian and bird diseases. The virus causes respiratory infections in humans which are usually moderate, but can be fatal in rare cases. They can cause diarrhea in cows and pigs, while it may cause an upper respiratory illness in chickens.

The virus causes severe acute respiratory infection in humans, and symptoms appear to begin with a fever followed by dry cough. Some people may experience shortness of breath after a week, and need treatment in the hospital. A new or “novel” coronavirus is the virus itself – a family that usually affects animals. It is a kind of common virus that causes an infection in your nose, sinuses, or upper throat. Most coronaviruses are not dangerous.

The World Health Organization identified a new type coronavirus (2019-nCoV) in China in early January 2020. By late January, there were 300 confirmed cases in China and a death count that was still in the single digits, but rising. And despite airport screenings, a traveller had brought the first case to the U.S.

History of Coronavirus

Coronaviruses were first identified in the 1960s that can infect both animals and humans but there was no clarity where they come from.

About 858 people have died from Middle East respiratory syndrome (MERS). It was first appeared in Saudi Arabia in the year 2012 and then in other countries in the Middle East, Africa, Asia, and Europe. 774 people died from a severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) outbreak in 2003. As of 2015, there were no further reports of cases of SARS. MERS and SARS are types of coronaviruses. The first American was hospitalized in April 2014 for MERS in Indiana and another case was reported in Florida. Both had just returned from Saudi Arabia. In May 2015, there was an outbreak of MERS in Korea, which was the largest outbreak outside of the Arabian Peninsula.

Common Symptoms.

The symptoms of most coronaviruses are similar to any other upper respiratory infection, including runny nose, prolonged coughing, sore throat, and sometimes a repeated high fever. In most cases, you won’t know whether you have a coronavirus or a different cold-causing virus, such as rhinovirus.

How its spread?

Most coronaviruses spread the same way other cold-causing viruses do: through infected people coughing and sneezing, by touching an infected person’s hands or face, or by touching things such as doorknobs that infected people have touched, etc.

Preventive measures.

There is no vaccine available for coronavirus. To prevent a coronavirus infection, follow the same practices you do to avoid the common cold and fever. Following practices may help you to prevent coronaviruses attacks.

  • Washing your hands thoroughly with soap and warm water or with an alcohol-based hand sanitizer.
  • Keep your fingers and hands away from your eyes, your nose and your mouth.
  • Avoid close contact with those infected.
  • Conduct periodic blood test.
  • Do not let your throat dry up. Drink fluids / warm water. Consume fresh fruit juice. Keep your throat moist.
  • Avoid gatherings in crowded places.
  • For a sore throat and fever take over the counter medicine.

There is nothing to be panic. Health authorities are particularly careful because more than 500 Indian Students study in Wuhan. Indian Health organisation have already taken the intensive measures at most of the airports all over India to safe guard the citizens by screening the passengers.
